Elsie Kelly

Elsie has been the permanent Director of BOST since 1973. She was for many years Head of Theatre Studies at the Elliott-Clarke College, and was a lecturer on the Edge Hill Theatre and Media course. Elsie is Merseyside’s most experienced Director of musicals, with more than eighty to her credit – many at the Liverpool Empire. She has also directed professional pantomimes at the Empire, Neptune, Floral Pavilion and Theatre Royal, St Helens – starring such artists as Les Dawson, Windsor Davis, Melvyn Hayes and Norman Vaughan.

As an actress Elsie has appeared many times on television, first coming to prominence as Mrs. Tardebigge in the original “Crossroads”. She appeared in all three series of “The Famous Five” as the Housekeeper, and in “Ghosthunters”, “Animal Ark”, “Hearts and Minds”, “Bread” and “Boys from the Blackstuff”. She was also a leading character in all three series of “Harry and the Wrinklies”. On film Elsie played Julie Walters’ Sister-in-Law in “Intimate Relations” and the Grandmother of Jason Isaacs and Nick Moran in “Brotherly Love”. In recent years, Elsie has become best known for playing Johnny Vegas’s mother, Noreen Maltby, in the hugely successful ITV series “Benidorm”. The last few years have been incredibly busy for Elsie; as well as continuing to direct BOST’s major productions, she has appeared in “Skins”, “The Peter Serafinowicz Christmas Show”, the BBC2 play “Occupation 2”, and in the feature film “Late Bloomers”, starring William Hurt and Isabella Rossellini. Most recently she has returned to our TV screens as Noreen in the fifth series of “Benidorm”.
